ONE THING
BY OREGON DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT
GARY GLEASON

Attention to detail is often over looked. We live in such a busy
society that many times the nitty gritty aspects fly by the board. Now,
in certain areas of living, this may not be a big issue. However, in
our walk with God, details matter! We have a goal in view from the very
begin ning of our spiritual journey. Our goal is to someday stand
before God and hear Him say, "Well done thou good and faithful ser
vant." If this goal is to be real ized then we must scrutinize ev
ery part of our lives and every corner of our hearts to make sure we
are living God's way.

There are many examples of individuals in the Bible who lived
good lives but forgot one thing, and that became the stumbling stone in
their lives.

MOSES

Moses lived a life of service to God; he was held in high esteem
in the eyes of God - he was called the meekest man in the earth by God.
What a commendation! He was given the honor of leading God's chosen
people out of Egyptian bondage and to the Promised Land. Yet even the
great man Moses allowed one thing to keep him from entering into the
Promised Land. He smote the rock the second time instead of speaking to
the rock. What a tragedy after all those years of faithfulness!

DAVID

David was a man after God's own heart. He was the sweet psalmist
of Israel. He was the mighty warrior who killed Goliath and brought
victory to Israel. He became king and was respected by all. In the
midst of these many accomplishments, he allowed one thing -his sin with
Bathsheba- to taint his walk with God. Oh, yes, he repented of the sin.
He was forgiven. But he suffered the consequences of his action for the
rest of his life. Also, his family suffered untold problems because of
his actions.

MARTHA

In Jesus' day Martha was busy about the many duties of the house
while Mary chose to sit at the feet of Jesus. When Martha complained to
Jesus, His reply was, "Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled
about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that
good part, which shall not be taken away from her."

RICH YOUNG RULER

The rich young ruler was careful to live his life in obedience to
the law. His comment to Jesus was, "All these have I kept from my youth
up." Jesus looked at this young man and said, "Yet lackest thou one
thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou
shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me." This young man
refused to do the one thing he lacked and lost out with God.

What a waste of a life!

YOU AND I

We are so close to the coming of the Lord. Heaven waits for us-in splendor and
glory with all its benefits and rewards. We must not allow one thing to cause us to lose
our place with God throughout eternity. Instead let us concentrate on one thing here and
one thing there that will help us to make our calling and election sure.

The psalmist said, "One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after;
that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of
the LORD, and to inquire in his temple."

The Apostle Paul gave us good advice when he said, "Brethren, I count not
myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are
behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for
the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus."

If we are faithful to do our part God will be faithful to do His part! Joshua said,
"And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts
and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the
LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing
hath failed thereof."
