David suffered at the hands of his enemies (Psalm 69:4) as well as his friends (Psalm 55:12-14) and loved ones (Psalm 27:10). He was rejected by Saul, a man that he “greatly loved” (I Samuel 16:21). Psalms 42 and 43 indicate that David suffered from bouts of depression, his soul was “cast down.” The psalms that he wrote express much anguish and pain, as he was called to suffer. Yet he gave his generation much understanding and revelation concerning the future.
