The King James Version Compared

THE KING JAMES VERSION COMPARED
BY JOE PATERSON

In this post I would like to make a close comparison of the King James (Authorized Version of the Bible) with other versions. There Are many people who feel that the King James Version of the Bible is “antiquated” and hard to understand; therefore, they use this reasoning to justify the use of other versions. What would you say if I were to prove that these other new versions have left words and in some cases verses out of the Bible?

The best way to prove this to you is to back up what I am saying with scripture so that you can see for yourself that there are indeed omissions (200 in fact!) in the manuscripts that ALL modern versions have been translated from. Are these omissions important? I will let you be the judge – for the purpose of this comparison I will be quoting first from the King James Version and then the New

International Version, lets take a look at some scripture:

Matthew 1:25 KJV

And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

Matthew 1:25 NIV

But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

FIRSTBORN. . . is OUT!

Matthew 5:44 KJV But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Matthew 5:44 NIV
But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who you, persecute BLESS THEM THAT CURSE YOU, DO GOOD TO THEM THAT HATE YOU,… WHICH DESPITEFULLY USE YOU… is OUT!

Matthew 9:13 KJV
But go ye and learn what meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Matthew 9:13 NIV
But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

TO REPENTANCE is OUT! (This changes the meaning of the verse)…

Matthew 20:22 KJV
But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.

Matthew 20:22 NIV
“You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said to them. “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?” “We can,” they answered.

AND TO BE BAPTIZED WITH THE BAPTISM THAT I AM BAPTIZED WITH…is OUT!

Mark 2:17 KJV
When Jesus heard , he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Mark 2:17 NIV
On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

TO REPENTANCE… is OUT!
(again)

Mark 6:11 KJV
And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

Mark 6:11 NIV
And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave, as a testimony against them.”

The WHOLE of the latter half of the verse is missing!

Mark 9:44 KJV
Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

Mark 9:46 KJV
Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

Mark 9:44 NIV

Mark 9:46 NIV

Yes… as you can see… the verses Mark 9:44 & 46 are not in the NIV translation – I wonder why?

Mark 11:26 KJV
But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

Mark 11:26 NIV

Another verse that seems to be missing?

Luke 1:28
And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, highly favoured, the Lord with thee: blessed thou among women.

Luke 1:28
The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

BLESSED ART THOU AMONG WOMEN… is OUT!

Luke 2:43 KJV
And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not .

Luke 2:43 NIV
After the Feast was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it.

JOSEPH AND HIS MOTHER (Has been changed to PARENTS)

Luke 4:8 KJV
And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Luke 4:8 NIV
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.'”

GET THEE BEHIND ME SATAN… is OUT!

Luke 9:56 KJV

For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save . And they went to another village.

Luke 9:56 NIV and they went to another village.

The WHOLE of the first part of the verse is OUT!

So… you thought you knew the Lords Prayer? (Compare KJV & NIV)..

Luke 11:2-4 KJV
And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. {3} Give us day by day our daily bread. {4} And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

Luke 11:2-4 NIV
He said to them, “When you pray, say: “‘Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. {3} Give us each day our daily bread. {4} Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us .
And lead us not into temptation.'”

Luke 17:36 KJV
Two shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

Now you see it…

Luke 17:36 NIV

Now you don’t!

John 1:14
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his
glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

John 1:14
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen
his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father,
full of grace and truth.

BEGOTTEN… is OUT!

John 6:47
Verily , verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

John 6:47
I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life.

ON ME (very important) is OUT!

Romans 1:29 KJV Being filled with all unrighteousness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, malignity; whisperers, fornication, wickedness, murder, strife, deceit, and malice.

Romans 1:29 NIV They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, malice. They are gossips,

FORNICATION (unimportant?) is missing…

Romans 8:1 KJV

therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Romans 8:1 NIV

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,

WHO WALK NOT AFTER THE FLESH, BUT AFTER THE SPIRIT… is OUT!

Romans 9:28 KJV

For he will finish the work, and cut short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.

Romans 9:28 NIV

For the Lord will carry out his sentence on earth with speed and finality.”

RIGHTEOUSNESS… is OUT!

And if by grace, then no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

Romans 11:6 NIV

And if by grace, then it is no longer by works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace.

(the Last 18 words are OMITTED!)

Romans 13:9 KJV

For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Romans 13:9 NIV

The commandments, “Do not commit adultery,” “Do not murder,” “Do not steal,” “Do not covet,” and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: “Love your neighbor as yourself.’

SHALT NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS… is OUT!

Romans 15:29 KJV And I am sure that, when I come unto you, fulness of the blessing of the gospel of Christ.

I shall come in the Romans 15:29 NIV
I know that when I come to you, I will come in the full measure of the blessing of Christ.

THE GOSPEL… is MISSING!

Romans 16:24 KJV
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all.
Amen.

Romans 16:24 NIV

Hmmm…

1 Corinthians 16:22 KJV

1 Corinthians 16:22 NIV
If anyone does not love the Lord–a curse be on him. Come, O Lord’

FROM SUCH WITHDRAW THYSELF… is OUT!

Revelation 1:8

Revelation 1:8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”

THE BEGINNING AND THE ENDING… is OUT!

Revelation 1:11

Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and , What thou seest, write in a book, and send unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.

Revelation 1:11
which said: “Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.”

(ten words are OUT! – ALPHA AND OMEGA etc…)

We have just seen how that the NIV translation of scripture differs from the King James Version NOT ONLY in the language that is used, but also in the editing; words (and sometimes WHOLE VERSES) have been omitted (in some cases the meaning of the scripture has been changed). Here is the voice of God on the subject:

Revelation 22:19-20

And if any man shall TAKE AWAY FROM THE WORDS OF THE BOOK OF THIS PROPHECY, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and
Some feel that this scripture is just speaking of the book of Revelation, but here is the same warning again:

Deuteronomy 4:2
Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish
Deuteronomy 12:32
What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not Add thereto, nor diminish from it.

Even if it were speaking of Revelation, the fact is that there are NO LESS THAN 14 OMISSIONS in that one book alone.

You might well be asking… “How do I know that the manuscripts that the KJV were translated from, did not add to the word?” this is an obvious and quite intelligent question to ask, due to the seriousness of the above scriptures. We will give an “intelligent” answer.

Westcott and Hort (translaters of the newer versions) primarily used 2 texts:

“The text of W-H is. . . an text, or even a ‘B’ text.” (Greenlee, Introduction p.2)

What Greenlee is saying here was that W-H often made their decisions on the basis of two manuscripts alone, and if these contradict one another (which they often do), on the basis of one manuscript alone, codex vaticanus (B)!

The KJV was translated from the Majority Text, other versions from the Minority Text. The Majority text is a “FULL” text; the Minority Text is a “SHORT” text. Either the Majority Text has added, or the Minority text has subtracted. And if we take seriously the warnings of scripture, we must determine which is the correct text.

Lets have a quick look at what the experts *did* actually say about the “supposedly” superior Greek Texts:

What did Milne and Skeat of the British museum say about Aleph:

Scribe A… would be put down as a poor speller but for the existence of scribe B. whose illiteracy is so startling that it is indeed a puzzle to understand how he can ever have been chosen to work on a manuscript of this class…

…Scribe D’s contributions are curiously spasmodic… In the New Testament he rewrote six passages where, apparently, scribe A had made some unusually serious mistakes. He also made a beginning with Revelations, but relinquished his task in favour of A after writing only the first five verses…

The number and variety of CORRECTIONS which have been made from time to time in the Codex Sinaiticus place it in a class by itself.

TISCHENDORF’S GREAT EDITION ENUMERATES 14,800 PLACES WHERE SOME ALTERATION HAS BEEN MADE TO THE TEXT…

Now we come to an interesting observation…

In the Gospels, where the corrections are very numerous and often of textual importance… the position is unusually complicated.

THE READER WHO DICTATED THE GOSPELS MUST HAVE BEEN SINGULARLY CARELESS, FOR AGAIN AND AGAIN WHOLE SENTENCES HAVE DROPPED OUT WHERE HIS WANDERING EYE HAD FAILED TO KEEP THE PLACE. A GOOD MANY OF THOSE WERE INSERTED IN THE MARGINS OF THE MANUSCRIPT BY SCRIBE A
There are internal evidences that lead to the conclusion that it was the work of a scribe who was singularly careless, or incompetent, or both.

(The Codex Siniaticus and Codex Alexandrinus (Oxford University Press 1938 pp. 9, 11, 12).

Codex B (Vaticanus), in the Gospels alone, “leaves out words or whole clauses no less than 1,491 times. It bears traces of careless transcription on every page.” (Fuller, True or False? p. 77)

So much for the “superior scholarship” idea.

Even if you discount the above evidence from the textual critics, consider that most of the 200 omissions that I have seen are to do with:

1. The Deity of Christ
2. The Virgin Birth
3. The Atoning Blood of Christ
4. Obedience to the Gospel of Christ
5. The Name of Jesus Christ
6. Holiness and Christian Life

Issues

Have you ever wondered how people can DENY THE VIRGIN BIRTH, that OBEDIENCE to the GOSPEL is not necessary, HOLINESS of life is no longer needed – Check out which manuscripts these ideas were formed from.

Are the omissions in the newer versions consistent with each other?

This is an interesting phenomena, as many of the newer versions used the same texts for their translation, lets take a look:

Version out of 200

New English New Testament 197
Revised Standand New Testament 189
Berkeley Version New Testament 185
Weymouth’s in Modern Speech NT 184
New American Standard NT 183
Good News for Modern Man NT 182
Williams New Testament 181
Ivan Panin’s Numeric NT 180

Goodspeed’s American Translation 179
Moffats New Translation NT 175

Wuest’s Expanded Translation NT 169
Amplified NT

Twentieth Century New Testament 161
Philip’s New Testament 142
Darby’s Translation NT 138
Living New Testament Paraphrased 130
New Confraternity New Testament 119
Norlies New Translation 62
Lamsa’s Eastern Text NT 49
John Wesley’s Translation NT 43
Martin Luther’s German NT 0
King James New Testament 0
Textus Receptus (King James Greek) 0

As you can see there is no consistency, among the “newer” versions. Here’s the Acid Test

Any version of the Bible, that does not agree with the GREEK TEXTUS
RECEPTUS, form which the King James Bible was translated in 1611, is
certainly to be founded on corrupted manuscripts. Origen, being a textual critic is supposed to have corrected numerous portions of the sacred manuscripts . Evidence to the contrary shows that he changed them to agree with his own human philosophy of mystical and allegorical ideas. Thus, through deceptive scholarship of this kind, certain manuscripts became corrupt. Evidently from this source our modern revised version Bibles and paraphrases have come. Read pages 900-902, volume 16, 1936 edition Encyclopaedia Brittanica, and
you will see that ORIGEN TAUGHT THE LORD JESUS CHRIST IS A CREATED
BEING WHO DID NOT HAVE ETERNAL EXISTANCE AS GOD.
