Job Purpose

To administer and motivate the Usher / Hostess Department in a manner that will bring order and courtesy in the House of God. The usher and hostess position is vital in that they make the
first impression upon visitors when they arrive. By being warm and friendly to all who come to the House of God, they set a spirit through which God can move. Your major focus will be upon
visitors reception, and also to assist in obtaining a Guest Card, seating, offering, doorkeeping, security, and a variety of other duties. In doing this, you are doing a great service in the work
of God and the moving of the Spirit.

Job Qualifications

1. Must be filled with the Holy Ghost.
2. Must meet the qualifications for church membership.
3. Must be loyal to the Pastor.
4. Must be willing to work in harmony with others.
5. Must carry a burden for the Usher / Hostess Ministry.
6. Must be able to lead and motivate others.
7. Must be a lover of the souls of men and women.
8. Must be faithful and dependable in accomplishing duties.
9. Must have a stable walk with God.
10. Must have a knowledge of the operation & function of Usher / Hostess duties.

Job Responsibilities

** Shall oversee and supervise all operations of the Ushering / Hostessing department under the direction of the Pastor. Shall seek to fulfill all responsibilities with tact, dedication, and love.

** Shall organize the Usher / Hostesses into three teams. Each team is to contain two ushers and one hostess. One individual on each team shall be designated as a “Team Captain”. Each team will
serve once per week and the teams are to rotate so as to have no team serving upon any one service time.

** Shall post a schedule of when teams are to serve one month in advance. All Ushers / Hostesses are to receive a copy also.

** Shall request the team captain to be one of the first to arrive each service and insure that the church is properly opened up, using the check-in list provided (very important).
a. Air/heat should be turned on first thing, if not already on.
b. Make sure that an adequate supply of offering envelopes and song books are available.
c. Insure that fresh water is placed on the platform.
d. Check washrooms for cleanliness and adequate towels, tissue, etc.
e. Insure that the sanctuary looks presentable and straight.

** Shall mobilize and supervise all Ushers and Hostesses, insuring that they are all at their posts at least 25 minutes before service time.
a. Shall strongly encourage all department staff to come early for prayer before taking their post.
b. Shall make sure a doorkeeping Usher is posted at the main entrance(s) to open the door and greet all visitors and saints.
c. Shall make sure a Hostess is posted in foyer to greet visitors and obtain a Guest Card on each one.
d. Shall make sure that an Usher is posted in sanctuary to assist visitors in finding a seat and to be of service in any way.
e. In the event of absences, shall always find a suitable replacement to keep the post filled for that service.
f. Only the Ushers are expected to remain on duty throughout the service. The Hostesses may find a seat following song service.

** Shall insure that all staff are of proper dress and appearance:
a. Make sure that Ushers have suit coat and tie.
b. Hostess should be attractively dressed and hair fixed.
c. All should smile, have a pleasant greeting and fresh breath.
d. All should have on an Usher or Hostess badge (collect after service).
e. Make mention to Pastor any staff violations in dress or appearance.

** Shall insure that Hostesses have proper supplies:
a. Hostesses need visitor cards, church pens, church information brochures, and the church bulletin.
b. Hostesses shall greet visitors, assist in completing visitor card IN FULL, and introduce visitor to an usher for seating.

** Shall insure that all visitors are properly seated, preferably on the main isle, about half way down.
a. If church is full, church members should “slide to center” to allow the visitor to have an isle seat.
b. Make sure visitor has a song book and is introduced to those sitting near.
c. Encourage visitors to use the nursery facilities if needed. Offer to take children to S.S. classes on Sunday Morning.

** Shall place all visitors names and locations on the visitor location list and bring list to the Pastor after song service so he may greet them.
a. This is a “map” of the sanctuary that allows you to write down the visitors name in the location that they are sitting.

** Shall coordinate the taking of the offering in the manner that follows:
a. Ushers should come to front of building upon being called for, all stepping out same time.
b. They should stand facing the congregation while the appeal and prayer is given.
c. The ushers then moves down the aisle allowing the plate to pass to each contributor. Make sure adequate personnel is on hand to allow this to flow smoothly.

** Shall insure that the proper temperature is maintained throughout the service – this being 68-70 degrees.

** Shall follow special service procedures in the event that a capacity crowd is expected:
a. Place out extra chairs.
b. Post parking lot attendants to assist in parking.
c. Recruit extra usher / hostess staff if needed.

** Shall check the restrooms every 20 minutes before and during the service to insure that children, young people, or adults do not congregate there.
a. Vestibule and halls should be kept clear during service.

** Shall insure that an Usher checks the parking lot for security reasons every hour throughout the service. Ushers should rotate this responsibility.

** Shall insure that the church is locked up and all lights, air/heat, etc. are turned off following each service. USE THE CHECK LIST FOR THIS PURPOSE. Don’t check it off unless you have
done it.

** Shall have a brief monthly meeting with all staff before service to go over any problem areas if needed.

** Shall hold an Usher / Hostess training night under the direction of the Pastor once a year. This is very important.
a. All ushers and hostesses should have a up-to-date job description that outlines all duties, procedures, and dress requirements.

** Shall provide a service to the church by having the Ushers sell mints to church members.
a. This money will be used to help pay for departmental expenses and perhaps have an annual appreciation banquet or bar-b-q for your staff.

** Shall provide the Pastor a list of recommendations for replacements when any vacancies occur on the Usher / Hostess staff.

Other Duties

** Shall work with the Pastor to select a department assistant to work with you in all of your various duties.

** Shall endeavor to not schedule any departmental activities on Monday night. Monday will be known as “Family Night” and all church members are encouraged to stay home with their families on this night.

** Shall be an example to the church in faithfulness by attending all church services and special functions.

** Shall be an example to the church in soulwinning by being continually involved in the Home Bible Study Ministry, or some other form of outreach ministry.

** Shall be an example to the church in spiritual growth by coming at least one-half hour before each service to pray.

** Shall attend all Annual Planning Retreats and Monthly Departmental Planning Councils.

** If unable to attend because of an emergency, shall inform the Pastor in advance and endeavor to have a substitute attend in your place.

** Shall hand in an official monthly report at the Monthly Staff Council.

** Shall perform additional duties are required.

Organizational Relationships

The Usher / Hostess Director is responsible directly to the Pastor. Each year, the Pastor and Usher / Hostess Director will review this Job Description, update and improve to make more
applicable to the position. Accountability shall consist of a monthly report of all activities and upcoming events. The  Director is responsible for all Ushering and Hostessing staff. The director shall work closely with all departments, but especially with Visitor Follow-up. Evaluation of performance of this position shall be performed by the Pastor on an annual basis. The term of this office shall be for one year.

Training and Development

** Purchase and listen to tape “The Doorkeepers” by Ronnie Wilhoit (Search for Truth).
** Read “The Ushers Manual” by Leslie Parrot (Zondervan.)
** Read “Let My People Grow” by Tim Massengale (Revival Research).
** Read additional book(s) provided by Pastor.

Job Goals for the year of 1988

** Train and begin Usher and Hostessing teams** Hold an Usher / Hostess training night.
** Have Guest Cards Printed (work with Public Relations Department)
** Have designed & printed a church information brochure (work with Public Relations Dept.)
** Purchase new Usher and Hostess badges.
** Develop a “Visitor Location Map” and begin to use.
** Develop check-in/check-out list.
** Purchase and begin selling mints.
** Develop Job Descriptions for all interdepartmental positions.
